The Keeper

An Irish speculative folk-horror story, told through letters.

6 installments. One installment a month. Posted from Ireland.

The story

A parish at the edge of the map. A post that has not been filled in living memory. And a bundle of letters that were never meant to leave the house.

The Keeper unfolds one envelope at a time. Each installment is a letter, a note, or a scrap of the record, written in the hands of the people who lived it. Read them in order, and read them slowly. The story rewards patience.

“You will want to know why I stayed. I can only tell you that the house asked, and I did not know how to refuse it.”

From the first envelope

In every envelope

  • A letter, printed on heavy paper and folded by hand
  • One or two story objects: a clipping, a ticket, a pressed leaf, a photograph
  • A short note from the club about that month’s installment
  • A real stamp and a real postmark, posted from Ireland

The installments

Titles only. The rest arrives in the post.

  1. Envelope 1 The Appointment A letter of introduction, and a map that does not quite match the land.
  2. Envelope 2 The First Winter Three letters home. One is unsigned.
  3. Envelope 3 The Well A page torn from the parish record.
  4. Envelope 4 Visitors A telegram, a receipt, and a reply that came too soon.
  5. Envelope 5 The Keeping What the house asked for.
  6. Envelope 6 The Last Post The final envelope. Do not open it early.
